News \ Next Nintendo Console Could be a Mixture of HD & SD

Nintendo executives have made a bizarre comment about possible plans for the next Nintendo console. While they are by no means concrete, apparently the company is looking at the advantages of creating a hybrid HD/SD console. The successor to the Wii will be able to output in high definition, should Nintendo go down this path; however, developers could also create games in standard definition.

"Moving to HD appears to me a natural flow," said Genyo Takeda the GM of Nintendo's Integrated Research & Development Division. "If we can find out the most appropriate medium, between SD and HD, and flexibly move around them depending on the game's contents, it will be good, I think."

Shigeru Miyamoto agreed. He suggested that games such as Wii Fit didn't require anything more than SD; whereas games such as Pikmin would benefit from high definition. On that, where's the next Pikmin?

That's true. Not all games need to be in HD so why force game designers to use HD? I am loving the idea of a hybrid console containing both HD and SD.

    =D

Yes well the title does not make any sense. It should be The next Nintendo console's GAMES will be a mixture of SD and HD. The console will just be HD enabled.

A miserable pile of circuitry and plastic, but enough talk, have at you!

Also, I agree with the article as well, a console with both HD and SD would be a good idea.

I see what you did there.
    SOTN FTW!

A Wii that could do HD would be awesome. SMG 2 in 720p would be awesome.

Forcing developers to support HD would be a good thing. It's about having a standard of quality. Sure, Wii Fit doesn't NEED to be in HD. Neither does any other game.

    Great idea.
Forcing developers to go HD would just make the Wii a much smaller target for developers.
While having HD will make other developers make great other-system games for the Wii.
I couldn't have though of a better idea.

How the heck will this compete with Blu-Ray...???

And If there is a HD Wii then all the other SD games will have to upscale and then they will look like crap.
