Nintendo executives have made a bizarre comment about possible plans for the next Nintendo console. While they are by no means concrete, apparently the company is looking at the advantages of creating a hybrid HD/SD console. The successor to the Wii will be able to output in high definition, should Nintendo go down this path; however, developers could also create games in standard definition.
"Moving to HD appears to me a natural flow," said Genyo Takeda the GM of Nintendo's Integrated Research & Development Division. "If we can find out the most appropriate medium, between SD and HD, and flexibly move around them depending on the game's contents, it will be good, I think."
Shigeru Miyamoto agreed. He suggested that games such as Wii Fit didn't require anything more than SD; whereas games such as Pikmin would benefit from high definition. On that, where's the next Pikmin?
